[EP] Dub Ugly
I experimented around the 140bpm range on this EP and came with this type of vibe.

FROM THE VAULTS: HEKLA ‘7 SHADES OF WHITE’
Hints of Jungle music pervade this dark dubby soundscape from Barry based producer Hekla. Indeed this track from his new E.P entitled Dub Ugly, maintains futuristic vibes whilst keeping a firm foothold in the corridors of Jungle’s past. Hekla layers sparse but effective hip hop flavoured beats and percussion over Sub Kick Bass drones and twisted textures to great effect. It invokes a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
The track kicks off with a post-industrial vibe, all throbbing pads and square wave bleeps, before the kick driven beats that will dominate the track begin. Real world drum sounds are favoured over electronic drum hits here. All tied together in a rather loose arrangement. A possible carry over from the artists previous (and more Hip Hop orientated), outfit Hekla Kosh.
A variety of well-fitting vocal samples and snippets are used sparingly to further sweeten the deal. Slymoove holds off on these until later on, in a track that has no real sense of urgency to get where it is going. This is perfectly appropriate to its Dub-heavy sentiment. Hekla, also practices photography and his artistic sensibilities shine through. Seemingly soundtracking some dark Gonzo road trip, whilst industrial washes of noise and fx urge the track forward.
In conclusion this is a strong confident track that delights in the merging of the old and new. In practise it would be well suited to winding down the back rooms of the more underground clubs, in the early hours of the a.m.
